Flying High Awards 2007 2006 |
MISSION STATEMENT: We believe that Flying High is the foundation for… Fitness, wellness, confidence, fun, strength, achievement, self-esteem, determination, focus, power, teamwork, friends, self-discipline, time management, goal setting, respect, coordination, flexibility… LIFE. Flying High is proud of the lessons taught by its coaches. We incorporate more than gymnastic lessons into our instruction; we incorporate life lessons. We believe that building self-confident, goal oriented individuals is vital in ultimately contributing to our gymnasts’ success. We are so proud of our alumni gymnasts. Flying High alumni have gone on to experience various exciting endeavors and achieve many accomplishments. We hope and believe that some of their success is due to the life lessons learned under our roof. Please read about the girls that have graduated from our Competitive Team after growing up as a part of the Flying High family.
I was at Flying High from June 1991 (opening) - June 2000, when I graduated from high school. I am the ONLY person to make it from FH's opening through to graduation. Yes, indeed.... I am very special. I attended college at Northwestern University and earned a BA in psychology and statistics. Currently I am a consultant in the logistics practice of IBM Global Business Services. I also just completed my 4th season of judging high school gymnastics. “Many times, gymnastics coaches are quick to write off the gymnast who doesn't shine with talent, disregarding completely her passion for the sport and willingness to work hard. If I had started out at any gym other than Flying High, I think I would have gotten lost in the mix because I didn't have the natural ability that some of the other girls had. I lacked flexibility and I was just awkward. But the coaches at Flying High saw that I loved the sport of gymnastics and that I was willing to put in the time and the effort, and, instead of giving up on me, they worked with me on my weaknesses. As time went on, I gained confidence and I found myself passing by many of those girls who were so quick to catch on at first. From my experiences at Flying High, I learned that hard work and perseverance trump natural ability. If you are passionate about something and work hard enough, you can achieve success. I continue to live by this important lesson everyday, and as a result I have accomplished things many would not have thought possible.”
I started at Flying High Gymnastics when I was in fifth grade. It was 1995 and I was about 11 years old. There I met some great friends who I am happy to say grew to be family as we practiced long hours in the gym. We saw the highs and lows of each other’s lives and share a special bond that we all carry with us still today. I competed with many of the girls from Flying High throughout high school on the Lyon’s Township varsity gymnastics team until 2002 when we graduated. Many of the experiences I have had after my life at Flying High are due to the dedication and time management that I have learned from gymnastics. After high school I continued my education at Illinois State University. I was able to keep up with gymnastics by joining the ISU Gamma Phi Circus. Throughout my four years with the Gamma Phi Circus I acquired more and more leadership responsibilities. During my senior year of college I decided to study abroad in Australia. I traveled on my own to the Gold Coast and spent a semester at Bond University. There I made many new friends from all over the world, attended class full-time and traveled up and down the coast of Australia (Great Barrier Reef, Sydney, Melbourne, etc.) as well as the islands of Fiji. I graduated from Illinois State University in May of 2006 with a 3.4 grade point average. For the past 8 months I have been working at Target as an Executive Team Leader. I found that retail wasn't the job for me so I have recently accepted a new job with The Carlson Group as a Logistics/Fulfillment Coordinator where I will be working with companies such as Nike, Adidas, TaylorMade-golf, and etc. I think that gymnastics and Flying High has given me many of the desirable attributes that companies look for today (dedication, drive, willingness to learn and time management skills). I feel that I owe most of my success to what I have learned and all the responsibility that I accepted from when I was young. “The best things I have gotten from Flying High are my friends. I love running into all of the girls I did gymnastics with, but even more I love making plans with all of them to catch up and it is like we have never missed a beat of our friendship and can pick up right where we left off. I also know that I can always come back to Flying High and be welcomed with open arms and happy smiles. Thank you to Chris and Flying High for years of wonderful memories.”
I think I started at Flying High the summer going into first grade...so that would have been the summer of 1991 and I was 6 years old. I was at Flying High for about 12 years until I was 18 years old (summer of 2003). I graduated from Lyons Township in 2003 and went to the University of Illinois in Champaign- Urbana and studied General Engineering. I competed gymnastics with the U of I club team, was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority, and was involved in a variety of engineering organizations. I graduated in December 2006. Right now I am on campus working part time for the Women in Engineering program. I recently went to China to visit friends and am planning on visiting friends in Europe in June. I will also start full time work hours after all of this. “The attributes that I developed while practicing gymnastics at FH have helped me in many aspects of my life. At FH, I learned that perseverance and commitment will help you achieve goals. And, I was able to experience early on how rewarding it is to achieve your goals.”
I attended Flying High for 12 years from 1992- 2004. I graduated from Lyons Township high School in 2004. I am now a junior at Valparaiso University studying elementary education. I am the vice president of my Sorority and the recruitment chair for Relay for Life. I tutor grade school children in the local schools as well. I achieved all this while earning a 4.0 last semester. To fulfill my love for traveling, I studied abroad in Greece during the summer of 2006. I still enjoy coming back to Flying High during all of my school breaks. I often coach and do office projects as needed. “Flying high brought me to who I am today. I am a determined individual who is always trying to make everything better. I have felt more confident in the past years because I have such a strong background from Flying High. Through the years, I have been fortunate to keep the very tight bond with the girls I have worked out with my entire life. They are like my second family. I still remember team bonding, sleepovers, competitions, the long drives, the team practices, and the feeling that I was able to accomplish many obstacles in my way and am still using that ability today.”
I was at FH for 11 years, from 1993-2004. I graduated high school in 2004. I am currently attending Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois. I am majoring in psychology and minoring in Spanish. This is my 3rd year as a member of the Gamma Phi Circus, the oldest collegiate circus in the nation. This year I will be doing multiple trapeze, tightwire, gymwheel, Spanish webs, and silks. I also act as captain for multiple trapeze and silks. On a more academic note, I am going to starting working with a psychology professor on research this upcoming semester. The project has to do with the field of developmental psychology. It deals with violence in dating/romantic relationships and how it is related to violent behaviors with siblings and other family members. “Flying High has definitely played a part in my life after gymnastics. I went off to college knowing that I would not be continuing gymnastics on a competitive team. Furthermore, ISU didn't have an intramural team, either. This was all pretty scary because Flying High had been my second family. I had met some of my best friends through gymnastics. It is because of my gymnastics skills that I found new family and friends within the Gamma Phi Circus. The strength and determination I received from Chris throughout my 11 years at Flying High continues to pay off at Gamma Phi, where I am learning many other exciting tricks.”
I started out at Flying High when I was in kindergarten or first grade and practiced for many long hours from 1992-2005. I graduated Riverside-Brookfield high school in 2005. I'm actually one of the few who has been enrolled at FH in all 4 gyms, and I remember all of them! Throughout Jr. High and High School I juggled many activities along with gymnastics and maintained a 3.7 GPA. I attended the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in the fall of 2005 for a year to pursue my goal of being an Athletic Trainer. I tried out for the gymnastics team, but injured my back and decided to finally be done with gymnastics. I was on the women's track and field team and participated in high jump. However, Athletic Training did not seem to want to cooperate with me so I transferred to North Central College in Naperville, IL in the fall of '06. There, I realized what I really wanted to do later on in life is coach gymnastics, so I changed my major to Sport Management and transferred in the Spring of '07 to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where I am currently a sophomore. I plan on graduating between 2009-2010. At UT I am in the Adidas Student Partners in Sports Program, which involves volunteering with sport related activities of all ages on and off campus. I believe FH strives in teaching its students life lessons along with gymnastics. For example, we always had to hold our leg above horizontal, and in school I would always picture above horizontal to remember the difference between horizontal and vertical. Also, I have gained a lot of experience with being able to manage homework, school, friends, and sports. I am a lot more confident now in my abilities since Chris taught me to never give up, no matter how many injuries, mental blocks, or hard times you go through. She never gave up on me whenever I got hurt, which was way too much for any of our likings, and strived to get me back to the same level and even better as soon as possible. FH was like my second family, and I still have a strong bond with a lot of the girls who I practiced for so many hours every year. We learned everything about each other, and we personally knew all the siblings and even other friends. The parents were everyone’s parents and always looked out for all of us. I'll always know there's a second home waiting for me whenever need be, and I still love to visit and be bombarded with smiles and hugs. FH and all the coaches have taught me to never give up, always believe in your ability, and have self-confidence, and I continue to carry with me these lessons wherever I go. I wouldn't be who I am today if it wasn't for FH.
I started out doing gymnastics at Flying High September 1990 until August 2005 where I still did gymnastics, but also worked. I graduated from Lyons Township in June of 2005. I am currently a sophomore at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana where I am double majoring in Finance and Entrepreneurship. It is taking over my life… if you could believe I actually spend most of my time at the library or studying somewhere else... crazy enough? Right now I am really focused on my schoolwork. Being a business major here at IU really takes a lot of time out your life. I am currently living off campus with 3 of my friends that I met last year in my dorm and I love it. I love everything about being here at IU, even the tests on Sunday... haha not. Then, in the summers and on break I work at the First National Bank of Naperville. I started out at FHG as a cute little gymnast :) and ended my career with them as a well-experienced employee and friend. I feel being part of Flying High has taught me more than just gymnastics. I have so many great memories of gymnastics itself and have made life-long friendships with many of the girls I trained with. Flying High prepared me to go to college and live on my own especially to get over the obstacles. Gymnastics did not come easy for me and I had to work very hard to become the gymnast that I did. The dedication that I learned from this sport helps me get through anything. I have run into many obstacles here at school regarding hard classes, illness, and just being in an unfamiliar surroundings. Without my experiences and what I learned from Flying High, I do not think I would have gotten through them so strongly. Flying High will always be a second home to me and I will never forget the memories that I have. My friends and coaches from Flying High are people who I will always hold dear to my heart because without them, I wouldn't be the person I am today. All, I can say is thank you to Chris for everything she has taught me about gymnastics, friendship, hard work, and most of life. |
*CONGRATS ANDIE!!!** Andie has once again wowed us with her AMAZING gymnastics skills. After making the Region 5 team, Andie competed at Nationals on May 19 in Mason, Ohio.
